Bangkok, 19 September 2019 – The SEC is hosting the Asia Pacific Takeovers Regulators Conference 2019, an annual platform for expanding cooperative network within the region and sharing views on regulatory frameworks and related experiences, to further promote takeovers efficiency.
The
conference takes place at the SEC Office Building from 18-20 September 2019
with delegates of regulatory agencies from 11 Asia Pacific jurisdictions,
namely Cambodia, New Zealand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Laos, Singapore,
Australia, Indonesia, South Africa, Hong Kong and Thailand. This is the 2nd
time the SEC has the honor to host this important event, following the first
time in 2013.
SEC Deputy Secretary-General Sirivipa
Supantanet said: “Merger and acquisition (M&A) is a
key mechanism for strengthening competitiveness and creating opportunities for
business sectors. In this regard, governmental policy and a sound regulatory
framework are among the key factors for supporting M&A efficiency without compromising
the right balance between facilitating business transactions and appropriate
investor protection.
“Through
this conference, we can expect to see stronger cooperation among regional
regulators, sharing of knowledge, views, technical expertise and other experiences
related to takeovers. This will not only promote timely updates on new
developments but also support proper and efficient supervision,” added Ms. Sirivipa.
During the past five years, an average of 14
listed companies have become targets of tender offers each year. This accounts
for approximately 2 percent of 712 listed companies with the total offering
value of 1.36 billion baht per year or about 1 percent of the total market
capitalization.
