Bangkok, 2 March 2020 – SEC joins forces with 24 public, private, and educational institutions to sign a letter of intent “Promoting equality and eliminating unfair gender discrimination” in order to show the intention to implement the Gender Equality Act B.E. 2559 (2016) - a law enacted in accordance with the Constitution of the Kingdom of Thailand. B.E. 2560 (2017). Businesses in the capital market are also invited to participate in the said matter.
This signing organized by the Department of Women's
Affairs and Family Development, Ministry of Social Development and Human
Security (MSDHS), has Mr. Jurin Laksanawisit, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Gender Equality Promotion Board as the chairman of the
ceremony together with Mr. Porametee Vimolsiri, Permanent-Secretary, MSDHS, and
Ms. Usanee Kangwarajit, Director-General, Department of Women's Affairs and
Family Development Center, and SEC Secretary-General Ruenvadee Suwanmongkol as
the representatives of the agencies that participated in this announcement on 2 March 2020 at the Prince Palace Hotel, Maha Nak,
Bangkok.
SEC Secretary-General Ruenvadee Suwanmongkol said that SEC encourages businesses
in the capital market to conduct business with due regard to good governance,
social and environmental responsibility, including “human rights and equality”,
in which businesses in the capital market have showed continuous improvement.
The practice is in accordance with the Corporate Governance
Code for Listed Companies 2017 (CG Code), which promotes board diversity, including
gender and age. There is an increasing proportion of directors and senior
executives of businesses in the capital market, for example, female directors
currently account for approximately 20 percent of total numbers of directors’
seats in listed companies. The board with at least one female member represents
approximately 83 percent of the total number of listed companies, while those
having females at the highest management positions (at the CEO and managing
director levels) account for 13.85 percent.
At SEC,
18 percent of the total number of directors are female. Employees at the
executive level (at the level of director and above) who are women account for
71 percent of the total management level staff. Female employees account for 67
percent of the total number of employees. In addition, the employee ethics
regarding the treatment of colleagues indicate that employees must not commit
discriminatory actions. In this regard, SEC promotes equality and elimination
of unfair discrimination between genders in line with this announcement in all
six areas.*
"SEC wishes to be a part of this announcement to promote equality and
eliminate unfair discrimination between genders as well as inviting listed
companies, business operators and all sectors in the capital market to work
together to achieve this goal in the future."
