Bangkok, 25 August 2020 – SEC and Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (Public Organization) (TGO) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for cooperation in driving forward reduction of greenhouse gas emission of business sectors in the capital market and promoting a low carbon society in Thailand. The MOU signing ceremony took place today at the SEC Building.
Pursuant to the MOU, SEC and TGO will cooperate in sharing knowledge, communicating and giving advice to listed companies, securities issuers or business operators under SEC supervision regarding the importance and the benefits of reporting carbon footprint for organization. Both parties will also ensure to have Carbon Footprint for Organization monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) system in place in accordance with international standards. On 19 August 2020, SEC in cooperation with TGO, launched an online training course for listed companies to prepare disclosure of carbon footprint information as a part of One Report.* Listed companies are continually registering for the course.
Mr. Kiatchai Maitriwong, TGO Executive Director, said: “The support for the synergy of cooperation among related sectors to reduce greenhouse gases and promote low carbon and sustainable business operation by taking into consideration the full-cycle mitigation of adverse effects of greenhouse gases is a key measure that will help Thailand to achieve the goal of greenhouse gas reduction in accordance with its commitments to the global community. We are pleased that SEC joins our efforts as a key alliance to support listed companies and business sectors in the capital market in reporting carbon footprint for organization. This is an effort of social responsibility and a move towards setting targets and measures for mitigating greenhouse gas emission of organizations for future implementation.”
SEC Secretary-General Ruenvadee Suwanmongkol said: “Our bilateral cooperation follows the conclusion at the meeting between the public and private sectors in the Thai capital market in driving forward the National Strategy and the National Reform plans. The topic on low carbon businesses is raised by private sector to Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha at the launch of the Thailand Responsible Business Network (TRBN) on 2 December 2019, and the sub-working group’s meeting to promote low carbon businesses, at the Government House in January 2020. This is an important beginning of the Thai capital market in contributing to the national plan whereby Thailand as a party ratified under Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, as well as its adoption of United Nations’ Sustainability Development Goals. Our efforts will also promote competitiveness and sustainability of Thai businesses and attract investments that address environmental factors and climate change.”
SEC invites listed companies to attend the online training course on “Greenhouse Gas Reduction Policy: Opportunities, Challenges and Assessment Methods.” Registration is valid until Monday, 31 August 2020. The online training course can be taken until Friday, 30 October 2020.
