SEC organizes “SEC Capital Market Symposium 2020” supporting big data usage and promoting innovation in the capital market

Bangkok, 24 November 2020 – The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) held an academic event called “SEC Capital Market Symposium 2020” to champion the use of big data to support advanced research and to promote innovation in the capital market. The result of which would help the formulation of effective policy to further the sustainable growth of the Thai capital market. In this symposium, SEC also shared the result of its research based upon big data analytic regarding behaviors of investors in each generation. Interestingly, the research shows that the number of new generation investors has increased and their investment behaviors have gradually changed.

In the event, Dr. Pichit Akaratit, SEC Chairman, honorably gave an opening remark. Whereas Ruenvadee Suwanmongkol, SEC Secretary-General, delivered welcome remark and stated the objectives of this symposium. More than 300 participants from both public and private sectors in the capital market as well as academic sector attended this event which held at World Ballroom, Centara Grand at Central World, Bangkok on 24 November 2020. 

SEC Chairman Pichit Akaratit noted: “Research is a process of creating new knowledge, enabling development and innovation. Research is, therefore, an important mechanism for economic and social development of the country. It also helps country prepare for change in response to various impacts arising from the increasing uncertainty and volatility we are facing today. Moreover, having information and research for consideration would facilitate the implementation of SEC’s policies on development and supervision of the capital market to be more precise and reach the result as expected.” 

SEC Secretary-General Ruenvadee Suwanmongkol added: “SEC pays attention to policy research and will continuously hold the SEC Capital Market Symposium. This year, we aim to demonstrate the use of big data in the capital market to further advanced research and promote innovation in the capital market. We believe that the usage of big data would lead to effective policy implementation and enhancing the sustainable growth of the Thai capital market as well as encouraging people of all generations to view capital market as their investment choice. Importantly, providing the business sector, especially SME and Startup entrepreneurs which are a crucial part of Thai economy, an alternative to raise funds through capital market.” 

Speakers in this event include Dr. Santitarn Sathirathai, Sea Limited Group Chief Economist and Managing Director, who gave an online speech on “Economy and Thai Capital Market on the Day the World Revolves Faster,” and Dr. Arm Tungnirun, Professor from Faculty of Law, and Director of Chinese Studies Center, Chulalongkorn University, who delivered a speech on “New World Order: Look at the Opportunities and Challenges of the Global Business in 2021.” 

“COVID-19 is the catalyst factor that prompt many of the world’s major trends to come faster, creating both challenges and opportunities for Thailand in several aspects. In this new normal situation, the capital market would play an important role in driving the economy in 4 ways or SEC-R which comes from sustainability, equality, competitiveness, and resilience,” said Dr. Santitarn. 

“In the future, capital market will face challenges from 1) Economic volatility, low interest, and high liquidity, 2) Aging society which requires long-term investment, and 3) Technology that will change the capital market. Businesses that would be able to survive these challenges are businesses that have world connectivity, businesses that can make use of technology transformation, and businesses that incorporate issue of environment, social and governance into their way of doing business. Businesses should use COVID-19 situation as a catalyst for changes. The stronger the businesses, the stronger the capital market.” said

At the symposium, the SEC Research Department also shared results of its research on investment behaviors of investors in each generation. Based on capital market big data, the research found a growth of new investor base and gradual change of investment behaviors. It also indicated that financial industry needs to offer more retirement products for increasing aging populations. In addition, there shall be investment products that are designed for investors of each generation. Other distinguished speakers from academic sector also presented research on capital market policy related to the behaviors and investment rationales of investors as well as research on impact of environment, society and governance or ESG on the corporate value of listed companies using factor investing techniques. In addition, there was a panel discussion about "Creating Research Value and Strengthening Thai Capital Market Potential for Sustainability," where the panelists pointed out the opportunities for new businesses in the capital market that will arise from further research, including those that will use technology as a driving force.
