SEC
Chairman Pichit Akaratit noted: “Research is a process of
creating new knowledge, enabling development and innovation. Research is,
therefore, an important mechanism for economic and social development of the
country. It also helps country prepare for change in response to various
impacts arising from the increasing uncertainty and volatility we are facing
today. Moreover, having information and research for consideration would
facilitate the implementation of SEC’s policies on development and
supervision of the capital market to be more precise and reach the result as
expected.”
SEC Secretary-General Ruenvadee Suwanmongkol added:
“SEC pays attention to policy research and will continuously hold the SEC
Capital Market Symposium. This year, we aim to demonstrate the use of big data
in the capital market to further advanced research and promote innovation in
the capital market. We believe that the usage of big data would lead to
effective policy implementation and enhancing the sustainable growth of
the Thai capital market as well as encouraging people of all generations
to view capital market as their investment choice. Importantly, providing the
business sector, especially SME and Startup entrepreneurs which are a crucial part
of Thai economy, an alternative to raise funds through capital market.”
Speakers in this event include Dr. Santitarn Sathirathai,
Sea Limited Group Chief Economist and Managing Director, who gave an online
speech on “Economy and Thai Capital Market on the Day the World Revolves
Faster,” and Dr. Arm Tungnirun, Professor from Faculty of Law,
and Director of Chinese Studies Center, Chulalongkorn University, who delivered
a speech on “New World Order: Look at the Opportunities and Challenges of the
Global Business in 2021.”
“COVID-19 is the catalyst factor that prompt
many of the world’s major trends to come faster, creating both challenges and
opportunities for Thailand in several aspects. In this new normal situation,
the capital market would play an important role in driving the economy in 4
ways or SEC-R which comes from sustainability, equality, competitiveness, and
resilience,” said Dr. Santitarn.
“In the future, capital market will face
challenges from 1) Economic volatility, low interest, and high liquidity,
2) Aging society which requires long-term investment, and 3) Technology that will change the capital market. Businesses that would
be able to survive these challenges are businesses that have world connectivity,
businesses that can make use of technology transformation, and businesses that incorporate
issue of environment, social and governance into their way of doing business. Businesses
should use COVID-19 situation as a catalyst for changes. The stronger the businesses,
the stronger the capital market.” said
Dr. Arm.
