Bangkok, October 9, 2019 - On October 9, 2019, SEC Secretary-General Ruenvadee Suwanmongkol, and SEC’s management team participated in the Asia-Pacific Regional Committee (APRC) meeting of the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) in Tokyo, Japan, of which Mr. Jun Mizuguchi from the Financial Services Agency of Japan (JFSA) is the Chairman. The meeting was joined by capital market regulators from 18 Asia-Pacific countries, including IOSCO Secretary-General Mr. Paul Andrews.
The meeting discussed significant and challenging issues
such as harmful, but legal conduct. In this regard, the SEC Secretary-General
shared her view on the importance of information disclosure that should be suitable
for each type of investors. She also mentioned the public hearing process that the
SEC is undertaking to enhance regulatory rules and supervision of bond market
to protect investor by way of providing sufficient information for decision
making and to reduce risks due to a high number of senior retail investors.
Furthermore, the meeting also discussed important issues related to:
1.
Sustainable
finance, presented by the Securities and Futures Commission, Hong Kong (SFC
Hong Kong). The SEC Secretary-General supports the proposal of SFC Hong Kong in
the development of environmental and climate data disclosure since it is an
important issue and is in accordance with the SEC’s policy in promoting
environmental, social, and governance (ESG) for sustainable capital market
growth;
2.
Market
fragmentation, presented by JFSA;
3.
Fintech
and Crypto Assets, presented by the Monetary Authority of Singapore, in which
the SEC Secretary-General also exchanged experiences with other member
countries, and;
4. the International Financial Reporting Standards or IFRS.
At the meeting, SEC Secretary-General spoke of the
successful outcome of the ASEAN Capital Markets Forum (ACMF) hosted by SEC on
October 2, 2019 in Phuket, Thailand. The ACMF agreed on the Roadmap for ASEAN
Sustainable Capital Markets with the objective to enhance regional capital
market development towards sustainability.
In addition, the IOSCO APRC Meeting approved SEC as the
host of their next plenary meeting, which is planned to be held between October
7-9, 2020 and expressed their gratitude to SEC for the readiness to host the important
meeting.
